THE WILDERNESS POST

Borderline - a John Haig Thriller was partly based on my experiences in the Quetico-Superior Wilderness.

I was twenty-one and employed as a canoe guide in the Quetico-Superior wilderness of northern Minnesota and Canada. Back then I was often a visitor at the home of Sigurd and Elizabeth Olson. Sigurd Olson’s iconic influence on my life continued through correspondence that lasted until Olson's death in 1983. I still see the wilderness through his eyes.

Sigurd F. Olson's Letter about the Wilderness Post

Dear David ------ 9/6/79

Was glad to get your letter and to hear you are starting a new magazine,
"The Wilderness Post." It sounds like a fine venture and one badly needed
all over the country.

Warmest Regards

Sigurd F. Olson

This letter was sent to me during my years of corresponding and visiting Sigurd Olson at his home above Ely, Minnesota. My old friend Steven Mitsch and I were young, hopeful and just starting out. We wanted to create a magazine called The Wilderness Post.

It would have been published as a bi-monthly full-color magazine that would focus on one single topic per issue. The topic would be addressed from several angles: literary, media, art, news and other perspectives. Our first issue topic was going to be about the gray wolf.

We had strong support from people at Time - Life and other publishing notibles, plus the blessings of author, Barry Lopez, as well as Sigurd Olson.

However we were soon deluged by reality, careers, family and we never pulled it off.

Steven and I have decided to try again. As I write entries on this page, please check back since I will also announce our progress moving ahead on the new Wilderness Post web magazine.
