FREE STUFF ABOUT SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
You may notice some repetition of my name, Dave Krikorian. But the name won't be repeated in excess for so-called keyword saturation. Tricking search engine spiders is out of date and can count against you. Here's what the Director of Search Quality at Google said to me about keyword saturation:
"We're aware that many people try inventive ways to increase relevancy scores on major search engines. Do we combat them? We'd be out of business pretty quick if we didn't."
I believe that taking the right steps, simple steps actually, can make all the difference in site ranking(SEO). Good writing can make a big difference because the process employs language and structure that Google and other search engines have been been programmed to recognize. A good writer knows to keep it simple and to the point. Keywords should match link names, descriptions should be in sync with META "Title" and "Description" tags, and so on.
UPDATE FROM VEGAS!!!
I've been in touch with some friends who attended PubCom, the SEO convention in Las Vegas last November. The big buzz is that ranking as we know it is about to take a big hit first quarter 2009. The buzz words are Personal-, Behavioral-, and Intent- based search. Much if this is Google driven, and based on spidering data from specific IPs on how a person uses search and where they are in terms of city and region. For example: for the search term Surgeon's Knot, a person who has searched for fly fishing gear will see a different SERP (search engine return page) than a physician who has a history of searching for medical stuff.
Some SEO's are running scared because this is very data-centric, and the current state of analytical data has been shaved down to communicate with marketing VPs who only want to hear about the bottom line: How high do we rank?
Not only are the search engines much smarter (I also learned that the number of algorithmic questions Google uses has jumped from 148 to 200) - the search technology can now read content, images, title text and words being spoken in Flash and other video players.
How will this affect your website?
Content. Content. Content. More than ever, content is the key to search ranking success. And the key to having content that is site relevant, useful and informative is good writing. In 2009, good straightforward writing will be essential for websites - large or small - to be viewed in the best possible light by more intelligent search engine robots.
Make no mistake, SEO is about to change big time. In a world where dollars are tighter than ever before, budgets and ROI will demand results. And companies who succeed amid the vastness of an ever changing Internet will more and more depend on having a good writer, who knows not only how to spin features and benefits but a writer who knows how to tell a great story. A great novelist once said, "It ain't about the writing it's about the story telling."
